Swiss Parliament Debates Wealth Tax

The Swiss Parliament has begun debating a controversial inheritance tax initiative proposed by the Young Socialists (Juso).

The initiative calls for a 50% tax on inheritances exceeding 50 million Swiss francs, with the revenue aimed at addressing climate change and economic restructuring.

However, the proposal has faced strong opposition from conservative lawmakers, who argue it could drive wealthy individuals and businesses out of Switzerland, harming the economy.

The debate has also seen alternative proposals, including lower tax rates and annual wealth taxes, but these too have been met with resistance.

Critics label the initiative as radical and accuse it of promoting class warfare, while supporters highlight growing wealth inequality and the need for fair taxation.

Despite the heated discussions, the initiative and its counterproposals are expected to be rejected by Parliament, with a public vote likely to follow later this year.
