Swiss Greens Challenge Women's Retirement Age Vote

Published: 2024-08-20

The Swiss Green Party is challenging the validity of a recent vote to raise the retirement age for women to 65, citing incorrect financial data used during the campaign.

The Federal Office for Social Insurance admitted to errors in their financial forecasts, which were pivotal in the narrow approval of the reform by voters.

The Greens, along with other groups, have filed complaints in several cantons, but the Canton of Geneva has already dismissed the case, stating it lacks jurisdiction.

The Greens have now escalated the matter to the Federal Supreme Court, urging a swift decision before the changes take effect in 2025. They argue that the miscalculation significantly influenced the vote's outcome and that the reform lacks legitimacy.

The decision could also impact a related increase in the value-added tax, which was contingent on the retirement age reform.
