Swiss Government Proposes Widow Pension Reform

The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a reform to the AHV survivor pensions, aiming to address gender inequality and reduce costs.

Currently, widows receive lifelong pensions, while widowers only receive them until their youngest child reaches adulthood.

The European Court of Human Rights highlighted this disparity, prompting the reform.

Under the new proposal, both widows and widowers will receive pensions until their youngest child turns 25. This change is expected to save hundreds of millions of francs annually.

The reform, which faces opposition from left-wing parties, will be debated in Parliament, with the final decision resting with the Swiss public.
