The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), along with Thurbo and RegionAlps, have announced the introduction of 286 new Flirt Evo trains by 2032, with the first set to be operational by 2026. These new trains, manufactured by Stadler Rail, promise enhanced features such as increased storage space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage, as well as improved mobile and data reception.
Each train will also accommodate two wheelchair spaces and a wheelchair-accessible restroom.
The rollout will begin with 107 trains in the Winterthur and Eastern Switzerland regions, followed by gradual deployment across other parts of Switzerland, including cross-border services to Germany, Austria, and France.
The investment in these trains amounts to 2 billion Swiss Francs, with an option for an additional 224 units to further expand rail services.
The new trains are expected to improve punctuality and environmental sustainability, using eco-friendly refrigerants in their climate control systems.
