Crime Surges in Switzerland

Switzerland has seen a significant rise in crime in 2024, with violent offenses reaching their highest levels since 2009. The country recorded 563,633 crimes, an 8% increase from the previous year.

Particularly alarming is the 19.4% surge in severe violent crimes, including a nearly 30% rise in reported rapes.

Experts attribute this partly to a new sexual offense law that broadens the definition of rape.

Cybercrime has also doubled since 2020, driven by economic fraud and data breaches.

While crime in public spaces has normalized post-COVID, private spaces remain a major concern, with many violent acts occurring behind closed doors.

The trend highlights the growing complexity of crime in a digital and post-pandemic world.
