Charges Filed in Bondo Landslide Case

Published: 2024-07-25

Five years after the tragic landslide in Bondo, Switzerland, which claimed eight lives, five individuals, including former mayor Anna Giacometti, have been charged with negligent homicide.

The charges come after a new independent report indicated that the landslide was predictable and that hiking paths should have been closed due to high risks.

Initially, the authorities deemed the landslide unforeseeable, and the case was closed in 2019. However, the families of the victims pushed for a review, leading to the new findings.

The accused, including two employees from the Office for Forest and Natural Hazards, are said to have made a wrongful assessment of the danger.

The trial will take place at the Regional Court of Maloja, where the defendants argue that hikers bear a significant responsibility for their safety.
