Bodensee Water Levels Hit Record Low

Published: 2025-04-06

The water levels in Lake Constance (Bodensee) have dropped to alarming lows due to prolonged drought and reduced snowmelt from the Alps.

On April 1, measurements at Berlingen recorded 394.55 meters above sea level, just 15 centimeters above the record low from 1972. The Untersee, the western part of the lake, is particularly affected, with the Mannenbach harbor completely dried up.

Experts attribute the situation to below-average snowfall in the Alps and minimal rainfall in recent months.

Forecasts predict no significant rain or snowmelt in the coming weeks, with levels expected to drop further.

While the situation is not yet critical, continued dry conditions could lead to severe impacts, especially for agriculture, later in the year.
