The Bluetongue disease, a viral infection spread by biting midges, has been detected in several Swiss cantons, including Basel-Stadt, Jura, Thurgau, and Solothurn.
Recently, five sheep were found dead near a daycare in Basel, suspected to be victims of this disease.
The virus, which affects ruminants like sheep, goats, and cattle, poses no threat to humans.
Despite the absence of a vaccine for the BTV-3 serotype currently affecting Switzerland, symptomatic treatment is available.
Authorities are implementing measures to control midge populations, such as using insect nets and repellents.
However, the disease's spread is challenging to halt due to the widespread presence of midges across the country.
