Avenir Suisse Proposes SNB Profit Redistribution

Published: 2024-09-17

Avenir Suisse, a Swiss think tank, has proposed a significant reform for the Swiss National Bank (SNB): distributing its profits directly to the Swiss population instead of the federal government and cantons.

This idea aims to reduce political pressure on the SNB and strengthen its independence.

Currently, SNB profits are divided, with one-third going to the federal government and two-thirds to the cantons.

However, this distribution often leads to political debates, especially when profits are insufficient for payouts.

Avenir Suisse suggests that direct payments to citizens, similar to the CO₂ tax redistribution, could range from 110 to 440 Swiss francs per person annually.

This proposal is part of a broader set of reforms intended to protect the SNB from political influence and ensure its focus on maintaining price stability.
